Celebrating a name day (Slovak: meniny) is an old tradition in Slovakia. Each day of the year is associated with one’s given name which is displayed in all Slovakian calendars. You can also find the name day in the header of daily newspapers. The celebrations are often held with happy name day wishes, flowers and small gifts. Popular names such as Maria, Jozef, Peter, Pavol and Anna are often celebrated with larger family gatherings and parties at work places. In the past, by law, parents were not allowed to choose just any name for their child. This has changed, although it is still common to choose the name from the name list in the calendar. The original list was the Roman Catholic calendar of saints, but changes have been made to reflect the present-day usage of names. Most recently, many new names have ben added to the list and several similar names might be celebrated on the same day.
Only very few people know that there is also a similar name day list in the US. Find out which date is associated with your name and make it special from now on!
