Herľany village is located in the eastern part of Slovakia nearby the city Kosice. The village receives a lot of attention for its unique cold water geyser. It is te only cold water geyser in Europe. There are only eight geysers like this one in the world. The geyser is unique by its location in a currently inactive volcanic mountain and an artificial activation through a 404,5 meters deep well.
Currently, eruptions occur around every 32 – 34 hours with water reaching up to 15 meters. They last approximately 26 minutes and have the average intensity from 25 to 30 liters per second. The interval between eruptions is usually shorter during heavy rainfalls. So far, in its 125 years of existence, the geyser has erupted more than 40,000 times delivering around 20 million liters of partially mineral water. Historically, the time between individual eruptions has been increasing and the intensity decreasing. In spite this fact, scientists believe that the eruptions will continue to attract visitors of Herľany for a long time.
