May Tree celebration is one of many unique customs in Slovakia.
The tradition origins back in the 16th century. A “May Tree” is a real tall decorated tree or a tree trunk (without the branches) that is erected on May 1 in villages and town squares around the country. The tree is usually painted in blue, red and white, decorated with ribbons and has a small pine tree at the top. Each town has its own uniquely decorated tree. Many towns also have a big festival around it that includes a procession, bands, singing, dancing, food, drinks and a lot of other fun activities.
